CSAH 34 (Birch Street) Reconstruction Project - Hokah Drive through West Shadow Lake Drive

This project is currently under construction.   Please see the Construction Weekly (https://www.anokacounty.us/1578/Construction-Weekly) for regular updates on this and other current construction projects.

CSAH 34 (Birch Street) is scheduled to be reconstructed to address corridor needs by improving mobility and safety along the segment. Multiple design options were considered during the planning process.  A divided two-lane roadway with roundabouts, center median and access controls is deemed to be the most safe, efficient and cost-effective option. Currently about 12,000 vehicles daily use this segment, which is expected to grow to 14,0000 by 2040.

Benefits of Roundabouts
Roundabouts slow down vehicles, protecting pedestrians and bicyclists and reducing the number and severity of crashes. Studies show roundabouts decrease crashes by 39% and fatal crashes by 89%.

Traditional intersections with traffic signals do not work well with the large amounts of traffic traveling along the Birch Street Corridor. Roundabouts will keep traffic moving continuously in all directions and create less backups than traffic signals. Studies show roundabouts reduce traffic delay by 20% to 30%.

The new design incorporates two roundabouts within the corridor so traffic can enter Birch Street more efficiently than traditional signalized intersections.

Navigating a roundabout is easier for pedestrians and bicyclists because traffic is coming from only one direction.
