El Holly

El Holly enjoys writing about a lot of things, but her heart is taken by the fantasy genre. Her fantasy adventure series, Phantasmic Wars, has been described by readers as “completely unique” and “very imaginative.” When she isn’t writing, she reads, teaches, drinks coffee, and goes on adventures with her family. She lives in Minnesota with her husband, their two kids, and her favorite fluffball, Mack.

  1. Tell us about the featured book. What is it about, and why did you choose to write this story?

Finding Fae is about Eevee, a 17-year-old Minnesotan who finds out that not only is she adopted (which she knew), but that her birth parents are fae. The book follows her as she comes to grips with this new identity and follows the clues left by her birth mother across the fae realm. There’s a mystery as to why Eevee was raised by humans and where her birth parents are now, and as she follows the clues, she also finds herself in more dangerous situations.

I chose to write this story because I love fantasy and I wanted to see a main character who is adopted, like me. I know not all adoption stories are the same, but I happen to have some amazing parents and a lot of times in literature the adoptive or step parents are portrayed as villainous.

Also, I'm excited to announce that Finding Fae was a 2021 BookLife Prize Quarter Finalist: https://booklife.com/project/finding-fae-58703
  1. Tell us a little about your writing process. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching, outlining, or planning before beginning a book?

Because I write fantasy, my research is often to read other fantasy books, which I do often. I think the most important thing a writer can do is read. My process from researching/outlining/planning to beginning a book depends on the book. For Finding Fae, it was about five months.
  1. Are there any writers or authors who have influenced your writing? If not, who are some of your favorite writers?

I have such a hard time with this question! There are so many great authors out there. To list them all would take a while. Instead, I’ll stick with my default answer: J.R.R. Tolkien is one of my ultimate favorite authors.
  1. When you’re not writing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

When I’m not writing, I am playing board games or going on adventures with my family, having pizza and movie nights, baking, drinking coffee, going on walks with the pup, working out, getting together with friends and family, and teaching English/Language Arts online. I’m just a bit busy!
