Recycling Guide

ACCEPTED ITEMS

Place items loose in your recycling cart.  No plastic bags.

Plastic: Bottles and Containers from the kitchen, laundry, or bathroom. Plastic #1, 2 & 5 only. Keep caps and lids on.



Metal: Aluminum & Steel Cans. Place loose metal lids inside the can.




Glass: Bottles & Jars. NO caps on.






Cartons: Food & Beverage Cartons. Keep caps on.




Paper: Newspapers, Mail, Cereal Boxes, Magazines, & Flattened Cardboard. Clean and dry/no plastic.

NOT ACCEPTED

Leave these out, since they...

  • Get tangled in or damage sorting equipment: plastic bags, ropes, hoses, shredded paper, chains, scrap metal, and other bulky items.
  • Harm workers: medical sharps, diapers, batteries, hazardous products.
  • Are not recyclable: foil drink pouches, chip bags, candy wrappers, dishes, vases, mirrors, plastic straws and utensils,  freezer boxes, Styrofoam, pizza boxes, black food trays, and egg cartons.

No Batteries Electronics ImageNO BATTERIES: Batteries and small electronics with batteries can explode and start fires if crushed or punctured.




No Plastic Bags in Recycling GraphicNO PLASTIC BAGS, PLASTIC WRAP, OR BLACK PLASTIC: These items become tangled on sorting equipment and have to be removed by hand.




no holiday lights imageNO STRING LIGHTS OR ELECTRICAL CORDS: These items get wrapped around sorting equipment and have to be removed by hand.




NO SHREDDED PAPER: Shredded paper is too small to be recycled at a facility — bags of shredded paper break open.




NO RANDOM METAL ITEMS: Recycling sorting facilities are only built to handle metal food and beverage containers.




NO STYROFOAM OR #6 Plastic: Styrofoam™ is not widely recycled — several recycling drop-off centers accept white Styrofoam™.
