NOT ACCEPTED
Leave these out, since they...
- Get tangled in or damage sorting equipment: plastic bags, ropes, hoses, shredded paper, chains, scrap metal, and other bulky items.
- Harm workers: medical sharps, diapers, batteries, hazardous products.
- Are not recyclable: foil drink pouches, chip bags, candy wrappers, dishes, vases, mirrors, plastic straws and utensils, freezer boxes, Styrofoam, pizza boxes, black food trays, and egg cartons.
NO BATTERIES: Batteries and small electronics with batteries can explode and start fires if crushed or punctured.
NO PLASTIC BAGS, PLASTIC WRAP, OR BLACK PLASTIC: These items become tangled on sorting equipment and have to be removed by hand.
NO STRING LIGHTS OR ELECTRICAL CORDS: These items get wrapped around sorting equipment and have to be removed by hand.
NO SHREDDED PAPER: Shredded paper is too small to be recycled at a facility — bags of shredded paper break open.
NO RANDOM METAL ITEMS: Recycling sorting facilities are only built to handle metal food and beverage containers.
NO STYROFOAM OR #6 Plastic: Styrofoam™ is not widely recycled — several recycling drop-off centers accept white Styrofoam™.
